Peasants in the middle ages
During the middle ages 9 out of 10 people were peasants; Most
only had one set of clothes two at the most. Peasants would make their own
clothes by spinning wool to make thread and then weaving their clothes. Peasant
men wore tunics with either stockings or leggings over their tunic’s men would
wear a belt at the waist. On their belt they would sometimes have a knife, a
purse and working tools. Peasant women wore long dresses made out of cheap
material which would be rough and itchy. The dresses would leave rashes and
sores where it came into contact with their skin. Both men and women peasants
wore underwear made out of underwear, their underwear was always washed but
other clothes were hardly ever washed. Peasant’s clothes were brown and drab
sometimes they would have greys or reds but never bright colours as dye were
expensive. They wore clogs or thick shoes made out of leather. During the cold
weather peasants wore sheepskin and woollen clothes to stay warm as many
peasants died due to exposure to the cold.

A serf is what a servant was called in the Middle Ages; their clothes were basic and practical. They would wear a blouse made of either cloth
or animal skin this would be fastened at the waist by a leather belt. Over the blouse serfs would wear an overcoat made of thick woollen material this fell
from the shoulders to knee. On their feet they would wear large boots or shoes. Serfs mainly went bareheaded but in cold weather or rain they would wear woollen
hats made from thick coarse wool. Padded gloves were also worn for practical use
in tasks like hedging.
