Lords clothing
Lords clothing changed throughout the middle ages. . From 900-1000 lords clothing were loose and belted. Coats and short clothes of chain mail were also worn. From 1000 to 1100 a person’s rank was determined by their head dress or cap. Some caps had streamers attached to a point at the top of the hat. The dress they wore was fastened at the waist by a belt, some dresses were fastened at the collar by a round buckle and two bands which formed a necklace. The belt around the waist had held nothing, Lords wore closed in shoes which were pointed.
From 1100 to 1200 lords clothing had a surcoat which at first was only worn by females but soon males wore this as well. The surcoat was originally made with sleeves but then they started to be made without sleeves. Lords under clothes were made with more expensive material for comfort although they wouldn’t be seen. As time went on the surcoat was made above the hips and the arm holes were made bigger so that the more expensive material could be seen.
From 1200 to 1300 gold, silver, pearls and precious stones were on a high and they were generously put on clothing. Lords clothing consisted of breeches, stockings, shoes, a coat, a surcoat, a head dress and for some a large belt made of gold. The stockings and the breeches both had the same colour and material. Shoes were mainly pointy this trend continued on throughout Europe for nearly 300 years. The material of a surcoat was cloth and was either scarlet, blue, reddish brown or some of these colours mixed together.
From 1300 to 1400 lords hats were made different shapes, they were made of different felts, skin from an otter or goat or wool or cotton. During this time people were wearing clothes so short and so tight that it took two peoples help to undress them.
From 1400 to 1500 lords clothing was still very short. It consisted of a tight waistcoat and very fitting breeches which showed the entire males figure. Lords wore shoulder pads to appear wide in the shoulders.Their shoes were either square or round at the toe; they were made of black leather. They wore a hat with an upturned rim, decorated with gold chains and various jewels. A coat was worn over the waistcoat which was open at the front and trimmed with fur. Besides wearing a tunic some men wore undershirts and briefs covered by a sleeveless jacket and another tunic. To complete the males outfit stockings were worn.
